Language Arts Reflection

This year in Language Arts I learned many skills about writing. We wrote three pieces consisting of a narrative piece, a non-narrative piece, and a fiction piece. My favorite piece was my fiction piece!

The title of my fiction piece was Finding the Flash Drive. I liked this piece because it was my best one so far and it was very good. When I wrote this piece I had to include lots of things like the ways the characters move, the character’s internal and external traits, and most of all, the character’s hopes, wants, and desires. I created obstacles standing in the character’s way. Also, I had to include the climax (where problems can’t get worse, but is the turning point of the story) and a resolution in the story.

I believe that I improved as a writer this year. I believe this because I used to write boring and lame sentences, but now I write nice, long sentences with variety. Writing better stories is a skill I can improve. Even though I can make long sentences, I still have trouble making goo stories that are long enough.

Finding the Flash Drive
-By: Natalie Waide6-Mannon
I woke up one Saturday morning in my two-story home in Coconut Cove, Florida, knowing that this would be a boring day (as usual!). Nothing exciting ever happened on Raspberry Road. I slowly sat up in my bed and the first thing I saw was my forty inch flat-screen T.V. hanging on my purple wall above my white dresser. I then looked to my right and saw my closet door and my bathroom with walls the color of the sun. I looked to my left and saw my desk with my Dell computer and green and white curtains hanging above my window. I climbed out of my zebra print sheets, stepping onto my fluffy black carpet. I slipped on my slippers and walked to my bathroom to start my morning.

I turned the cold silver handles on the shower, hoping that the water would be much warmer.
Stepping into the shower, I heard mom call, “Gabby, I am going to the supermarket. I will be back in a few hours.”

“O.K.” I replied.

Soon after mom left, Gabriella got out of the shower and went to her closet to get clothes to get dressed. As she was walking over to her closet, Gabriella noticed a note taped onto her mirror. She read the note out loud and was shocked. The note said:

“I will give you three days to find your mom’s flash drive. I f you don’t, something very bad will happen to you and your family. There will be instructions on your way.”
Gabriella thought that the note was just a trick played on her by her little brother, Andrew. Andrew was always doing these things to her. She paid no attention to the note and got dressed. Gabriella slipped on blue jeans and a light green T-shirt. Gabriella started downstairs for breakfast and saw something. There was an arrow pointing towards her kitchen door. She slowly walked over and saw another note. It said:
“Here is your first clue: You will go to the store and purchase black clothing for a mission I will send you on later.”
Gabriella followed other arrows leading her to the living room. She saw a twenty dollar bill sitting on the T.V. Gabriella suddenly felt frightened. She was starting to believe these notes were real.

Gabriella grabbed the money and pocketed it. She was anxious to know what would happen next, so she ran outside and hopped onto her turquoise bike. She raced out of the driveway, almost hitting her mailbox! As Gabriella rode down the road, she noticed that she forgot to put on her shoes! Gabriella turned around and went home. She slid on her pink tennis shoes and ran outside once again. Gabriella hoped on her bike again and road to the department store. She purchased black sweatpants, a black sweatshirt, and black sneakers.
Gabriella went home and found another note. It said:
“Your mom’s flash drive is in her office. After you eat dinner, have your dad drive you to the mall. After he leaves, go across the street to your mom’s work and you will find another note.”
Gabriella was so excited to know what would happen next. To make time go by fast, she helped her mom with dinner and vacuumed the playroom and the dining room. Dinner was finally ready. Gabriella quickly ate her spaghetti and drank her lemonade. After she ate, she ran up to her room and put on her black clothing she bought earlier that day.

“Dad,” Gabriella begged, “can you take me to the mall?”
“I have to go to work,” Replied dad. Gabriella’s dad was a police officer and worked at night.
“Please?” she asked again.
“No! If you really want to go, ask Michael,” said dad, “but don’t bother your mother because she isn’t feeling well.”
“Fine, I’ll go ask Michael…………” moaned Gabriella. After dad left, she ran up to Michael’s room. Michael was her nineteen year old brother.
Gabriella barged into Michael’s room. She demanded, “Take me to the mall now!”
“Why should I?” asked Michael in a stern voice.
“Now!” demanded Gabriella again.
“No, and get out of my room…….NOW!” yelled Michael.

“Make me!” Gabriella replied.
Michael took her by the hand, led her out of the room, and slammed the door right in her face. Gabriella knew Michael wouldn’t take her to the store, so she had no choice but to take herself. So, Gabriella packed a water bottle, a granola bar, some chocolate and a flashlight in a small sack.

It took her about forty minutes to get to the mall. Gabriella took a short break before she went to her mom’s work across the street. She sat down in the bushes near the road and ate her granola bar. She felt so sleepy!
“I can’t fall asleep… I can’t fall asleep…” Gabriella whispered to herself. Gabriella squirted water on her face to try to wake up, but it didn’t work. She shined the flashlight in her face to try to wake up, but it was no use. Gabriella laid in the leaves. Gabriella suddenly remembered the chocolate she packed. She rummaged through her brown sack to find the chocolate.

“Yum!” laughed Gabriella “you never know when you’ll need chocolate!”
Now that Gabriella was awake (FINALLY!), she carefully sneaked across the street to her mom’s work. At the back door she found another note. The note read:
“There is a window in the front of the building that is unlocked. Open the window, climb in, and take the stairs up to the fourth level. Your mom’s office is number 557.”
Gabriella followed the directions and went to the front of the building. She found the unlocked window and opened it. Climbing in, she heard a noise. Gabriella wasn’t sure if it was a person or an animal. She climbed in slowly and walked into the hall way and found the stairs. Gabriella heard the noise again. She stopped and crept back down the stairs. She followed the noise as it got louder and louder. Gabriella then found herself in the cafeteria and the noise stopped. She heard the noise again and paused.
Gabriella spun around and yelled, “’GOTCHA!”

Nothing was there. Gabriella walked back up the stairs and heard the noise again, this time ignoring it. When she got up to level four, she set out and looked for office number 557. When she found it there was a note taped to the door. The note said:
“You made it! Now, the key to your mom’s office door is taped to the back of this note. Unlock the door and find your mom’s flash drive.”
Gabriella found the key to the door and unlocked it. She walked in and started to look for the flash drive.
It was now 11:18 p.m. and she still didn’t find the flash drive or another note after looking for fifty minutes. Gabriella sat down to take a break and thought about where the flash drive would be. Finally it hit her like a wall! The computer! Gabriella sprinted over to her mom’s laptop sitting on her desk. She found another note on top of the laptop and read it out loud. It said:
“Here’s your last note. The flash drive is in your mom’s desk. You take it from here.”
“Knew it!” shouted Gabriella.
Gabriella slowly pulled open the large, brown desk drawer. Rummaging through it, she finally found the black flash drive and plugged it into the white laptop.
Turning the laptop on, Gabriella was excited and nervous about what would happen next. When the computer turned on, a black screen appeared with a Dell logo and then a blue screen appeared with two white boxes - one for the username and one for the password.
“Uh-Oh!” whispered Gabriella. She didn’t know her mom’s username or password!
“This is bad!” said Gabriella, “really bad!” Gabriella sat down in the blue office chair and thought about what she would do next. Would she call her dad or brother to see if they knew? Would she just quit and go home? All these thoughts were going through her head. She just knew she couldn’t quit now. She had made it so far!
“Maybe there’s another note…..” Gabriella whispered to herself. She ran all over the room trying to look for another note. Gabriella was so tired!
“…..or maybe there’s not.”
Gabriella walked slowly home, thinking about who wrote the note and what that person wanted her to know. Was it some sort of secret? Was it something that would help her, her family or both in the future? She just didn’t know! When Gabriella arrived home, she went up to her room to think about a way to get her mom to tell her the password and username.
“I got it!” shrieked Gabriella.
The next morning, Gabriella ran into her mom’s room and woke her up.
“Hey, mom!” said Gabriella excitedly, “how ya’ feeling?”
Mom replied, “Hungry!”
“Great!” said Gabriella with a joy. Her plan was working out great (at least so far!).
“How about some French toast sticks, bacon, and orange juice?” Asked Gabriella.
“As a matter of fact, I would LOVE that………… but we don’t have bacon or orange juice.” Said mom with a small frown on her face.
“Well, how about I take you out to Scoop’s?” she asked. Scoop’s was a new breakfast place down the street.
“O.K.! But there’s one slight problem: I don’t know where it is.”
“Perfect! I mean, that’s O.K., I’ll just look up the address on the computer!”
“Alrighty then! You go do that and I’ll get dressed.”
Gabriella suddenly filled with joy and was so happy! She would just need to take her mom out to breakfast for a few hours and then go back to her mom’s work. She turned on her mom’s computer and called upstairs to her mom.
“Hey mom, I need your password and user name!”
“K. it’s * and !”
“Thanks mom!” yelled Gabriella.
On the computer screen, once again, two little boxes appeared on the screen, but this time she knew what to put in them. She typed in the two magic words and it unlocked!
“YES! I DID IT!” exclaimed Gabriella.

After breakfast, she ran home and told her mom that she was going to her friend’s house. Gabriella’s mom let her go. She took her bike to her mom’s work. The window was still open and she hopped inside. She ran upstairs to level four and went inside room number 557. She turned on the computer and, once again, the two boxes appeared on the screen. But this time she knew what to do.
